Is secession treason, sedition, or illegal?

No, secession is not treason, sedition, or illegal. Treason is defined in the Constitution as levying war against the US. Free Louisiana advocates for a peaceful separation during a time of peace. If the US were currently under attack, Free Louisiana would wait until our citizens were safe again before proposing independence. US law, such as sedition law, also bans the violent overthrow of the US government, or advocating for such.

Isn’t splitting the US unpatriotic?

No. The Founding Fathers were British subjects who seceded from Great Britain by signing the Declaration of Independence, after their government stopped recognizing their rights – rights recognized by Great Britain’s constitution. The Vice-President of Free Louisiana, Hy McEnery, former Army Special Forces, swore an oath to the US Constitution, not to the number of states in the Union. He helped found Free Louisiana because he saw the same thing happening to Louisiana today – a distant government refusing to be limited by the Constitution.

The Louisiana Declaration of Rights is Article 1 of the Louisiana Constitution. It says “§1 All government, of right, originates with the people, is founded on their will alone… §26 The people of this state have the sole and exclusive right of governing themselves as a free and sovereign state.”
