Libertarians endorse Louisiana Independence Referendum

January 27, 2025 – The Libertarian Party of Louisiana overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for their state to hold a referendum on whether Louisiana should be independent of Washington DC, at their Central Committee meeting in Alexandria on Saturday.

A top-rated pollster, SurveyUSA, found that Louisianans are 50% in favor of Louisiana peacefully becoming independent, and only 7% of Americans think the federal government should attack a state that withdraws from the Union. The 2022 poll is the only poll of Louisianans on the topic that has been weighted and balanced to match the demographics of Louisiana.

The resolution passed on Saturday justifies the need for a vote by listing three actions of the federal government: abandoning limited government, weaponizing government for political purposes, and sending Louisianans into “foreign wars that have questionable purpose and duration.”

Larkin Jackson, who is the president of a new organization called Free Louisiana, which works to make Louisiana an independent state, was invited to attend to present the case in favor of the resolution. He said, “if Louisiana were to lead the way, other states would follow. A federation of the states of middle America could provide security and economic heft, but leave each state to set its own policies in accordance with its unique values and cultures.”

Their website, FreeLouisiana.org, points to the financial effects of federal restrictions on industry and argues that Louisiana, not Washington, should get the royalties from offshore oil leases and tariffs collected at Louisiana ports.

The homepage of FreeLouisiana.org states that “The US Constitution’s list of things that states may not do does not include secession. And the Tenth Amendment (in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights) says any powers that states didn’t delegate to the federal government are retained by the states, or by the people. So the states still have the right to withdraw from the Union that they joined.”

Jackson clarified, “Although separating during a time of war would be considered disloyal, it is a right of a free people during times of peace. And we launched our organization in July, so our timing has nothing to do with recent elections or inaugurations. The West and East Coast will always vote for government that is incompatible with Louisiana’s goals, needs, livelihoods, lifestyle, and culture.”

Resolution to Free Louisiana

Jan 25, 2025

Whereas the United States federal government has abandoned compliance to the concept of limited government as enshrined by our foundational documents – the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution, and

Whereas various agencies of the US federal government, namely the IRS, FBI, ATF, DEA, TSA, FDA, CDC, NIH, et al, have all been weaponized for political partisan purposes in such a way as to harm all American citizens, and

Whereas Louisianans are being sent as troops who are forced to participate in foreign wars that have questionable purpose and duration,

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Libertarian Party of Louisiana calls on the Louisiana State Legislature to give the voters of Louisiana the opportunity to vote on whether or not Louisiana should, without initiating force, negotiate for independence from the United States federal government.
