Louisiana Independence Movement Speaks to Global Summit on Self-Determination

February 24, METAIRIE – Louisiana was represented at the 2025 Global Summit on Self-Determination Saturday by Larkin Jackson, president of Free Louisiana, an independence movement. The organization’s website FreeLouisiana.org states that “Since July 2024, Free Louisiana has organized Louisianans to encourage our state government to peacefully lead middle America out of the Union, so that we can have government that protects us, our livelihoods, and Louisiana values.”

“We’ve seen industries crippled by federal over-reach… and we’ve seen hostility toward our energy sectors… they put mandates on our businesses that does not make sense for Louisiana,” he said in his address to the conference.  “People who want to just want to put food on the table and earn a living can’t, because of a foreign entity a thousand miles away… while Washington wastes our money on failed programs.”

“We get decay in our moral standards,” he added.

A top-rated pollster, SurveyUSA, found that Louisianans are 50% in favor of Louisiana peacefully becoming independent, and only 7% of Americans think the federal government should attack a state that withdraws from the Union. The 2022 poll is the only poll of Louisianans on the topic that has been weighted and balanced to match the demographics of Louisiana.

The homepage of FreeLouisiana.org states that “The US Constitution’s list of things that states may not do does not include secession. And the Tenth Amendment (in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights) says any powers that states didn’t delegate to the federal government are retained by the states, or by the people. So the states still have the right to withdraw from the Union that they joined.”

Jackson clarified, “Although separating during a time of war would be considered disloyal, it is a right of a free people during times of peace.”

Last month, the Libertarian Party of Louisiana overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for their state to hold a referendum on whether Louisiana should be independent of Washington DC.
